Jens Scheuer got his first game as Albion boss under his belt on Sunday.

Albion hosted Southampton for a behind closed doors friendly at the American Express Elite Performance Centre on Sunday afternoon, marking Jens Scheuer's first game as our women's first team head coach.

It was challenging weather conditions in Lancing as wind, rain and hail pelted down throughout the first half.

However, it didn't take long for the visitors to take the lead as Ella Morris slotted the ball past Megan Walsh with just three minutes on the clock.

Despite the early setback, the team quickly refocused and showed hunger to redirect the flow of play and pressurise their backline, but Saints were able to carry the lead at the end of the first 45.

In the second half, Albion dug deep and fought intensely as they went in search of an equaliser and were unfortunate  not to find the back of the net by the end of the match.

Although it wasn't the desired result for the squad, Scheuer was pleased to get his first match under his belt as well as welcome Rebekah Stott and Maisie Symonds back to the pitch for the first time this season after injury and illness.

Speaking exclusively at full time, the boss gave his thoughts on the 90 minutes and believes the player performances were the key element to take away from the game.

He said, "We worked together for five or six days, it was important to see a picture of the girls and give them all minutes, especially the young players.

"I'm really satisfied with the game, the girls wanted to change the result, I thought we were the better team and had a lot of chances, it's positive that we created a lot of chances. We know what we have to work on.

"The result isn't what we wanted or expected, but I spoke to the girls and said I was satisfied with what they gave to the team and the intensity, it was important to give every girl a chance to see what level they are."

Sheuer briefly looked ahead to the return of the WSL this weekend, when Albion play their first competitive game under their new boss at the King Power Stadium against Leicester.

The German coach emphasised that the squad will utilise this opportunity to create a winning culture environment.

He continued, "I'm really looking forward to the Leicester game because we have another week to prepare, that makes me think positively and I'm happy for the next week.

"We spoke about what we wanted to achieve and create a winning culture with the girls, I could see that today. We created a lot of chances and everything is good.

"For me, it is good that we lost this friendly game because it means we can change things next week. We'd be more disappointed if we won today and lost next week.

"We tried a lot today, new positions on players, for that level I was really satisfied. They gave everything, I'm thinking really positively.

"My focus is from now until Leicester, if we have our homework done, we'll gain three points. It's all about our focus for the next game."
