Guemmin Lee tries to find a way through the Tottenham defence.

Albion suffered the worst defeat in their WSL history as a ruthless Tottenham team scored four goals in each half at the Broadfield Stadium.

The visitors were ahead after a minute through Molly Bartip and by the break Tottenham led 4-0 thanks to further goals from Nikola Karczewska, Ashleigh Neville and Drew Spence.

Albion then conceded three goals in four minutes early in the second half as Neville and Spence got their second before Jessica Naz lobbed Meg Walsh from 35 yards to make it 7-0. Naz struck again in the closing stages to make it 8-0 for a rampant Spurs.

It was an afternoon to forget for Albion who need to regroup quickly with a trip to West Ham United to come in the WSL next Sunday.

Hope Powell named the same side which had lost 2-0 to Chelsea last Sunday but Jorja Fox, who was ineligible for that game, returned on the bench.

The Albion line-up before facing Tottenham.

It was the fourth time already this season that Albion had faced one of last season’s top five and they fell behind after just 61 seconds. Spurs had already won two corners and when the second was only partially cleared Bartip chipped the ball over a crowded six-yard box and Meg Walsh to score from 25 yards.

Albion responded impressively, camping in the Spurs’ half with Vea Sarri forcing Tinja Korpela to save a well-struck effort from 25 yards in the 14th minute before Korpela did even better after Elisabeth Terland’s back-heel found Julia Zigiotti whose curling effort was pushed out with a strong left hand by the Spurs’ keeper.

However, Albion suffered another blow on 19 minutes. Emma Kullberg played the ball back to Walsh but her clearance hit Karczewska and the Spurs’ no.9 was able to sidefoot the ball into an empty net.

Kayleigh Green, who had been hurt earlier, came off and Fox replaced her at right back but the second goal seemed to have knocked Albion’s confidence and Spurs took advantage with a third in the 29th minute when Neville found the top right-hand corner from the edge of the box after Angharad James’ corner had found its way to her.

Kayleigh Green's afternoon was cut short by injury.

Albion had a mountain to climb. Poppy Pattinson tested Korpela with an effort from distance but Neville was denied her second when Walsh dived to her left to push away her shot. But it was 4-0 before the break when Spurs again showed their ruthlessness, the impressive Spence eluding Victoria Williams before firing a right-foot shot across Walsh and into the far corner.

Danielle Carter replaced Libby Bance at the break with Geummin Lee dropping back into midfield and the former England striker had Albion’s first attempt of the second half, a shot on the turn which was deflected wide.

Zigiotti also tested Korpela but Spurs then struck three goals in four minutes to make it a miserable afternoon for the hosts.

Celin Bizet Idhusoy’s deep cross found Neville towering above Fox at the far post to powerfully head past Walsh and make it 5-0. Neville then turned provider, finding Spence ten yards out and she turned and shot powerfully past Walsh.

Elisabeth Terland puts pressure on the Tottenham defence.

The afternoon got even worse when, straight from the restart, Albion gave the ball away and substitute Jessica Naz looked up 35 yards out, spotted Walsh off her line and lobbed the keeper to make it 7-0.

Substitute Chimoma Ubogagu was inches away from scoring with her first touch after exchanging passes with Naz and firing just wide but Albion kept going and Elisabeth Terland was close to a consolation but her goal-bound shot was deflected wide.

Instead Naz picked her spot with seven minutes to go to become the third Tottenham player to score twice and complete an afternoon Albion will quickly need to put behind them.
