Preview: Albion face Spurs in the WSL

A look-ahead to today's game at the Broadfield Stadium.

By Bruce Talbot • 30 October 2022

Albion are back at the Broadfield Stadium when they take on Tottenham Hotspur in the WSL, kick off 2pm. Hope Powell’s team will be looking to bounce back after last Sunday’s 2-0 home defeat to champions Chelsea.

Team news

Megan Connolly and Rebekah Stott are back in training but won’t be available for this fixture while Maisie Symonds is doing light training as she recovers from glandular fever. Jorja Fox returns to the squad after being ineligible to play her parent club Chelsea.

Hope Powell’s view

“Last Sunday was our best performance of the season, the only thing missing was the result. We set a standard and that’s what we have to aim to achieve every week. Consistency in performance is 100% the key to us getting results in the WSL.”

Player to watch

Jamaican midfielder Drew Spence signed for Spurs from Chelsea during the summer.

She scored 50 goals in 238 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea and had been at the club for 14 seasons.

During her time in west London, Spence helped Emma Hayes’ side win 11 major trophies including five league titles. Her first England call-up came in 2015, but after a couple of appearances for the Lionesses she switched allegiances to Jamaica and has helped them qualify for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Stats and facts

Brighton have won two of their six Barclays WSL matches against Tottenham, losing the other four. Those two wins nonetheless came in their last two home matches in this fixture, both in 2021.

Having won their last two home matches against Spurs in the Barclays WSL in March and October of 2021, Brighton are looking to beat a side in three consecutive home matches in the competition for only the second time, also doing so against Birmingham City between 2019 and 2020 (3).

Tottenham have won just one of their last six away games in the Barclays WSL (D2 L3), with that win coming against Leicester earlier this season. Spurs have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their last five away games (12 goals conceded).

Spurs have only lost two of their last 10 league matches outside London (W6 D2) and are unbeaten in their last four outside the capital (W2 D2).

Spurs have conceded three goals following opposition high turnovers this season in the Barclays WSL, the most of any side.

Albion have used only 15 players in the Barclays WSL this season, the fewest of any side. The Seagulls have given seven combined appearances to substitutes, with no other side giving fewer than 12.

Tottenham’s Kyah Simon (2) is the only player from either squad to have scored more than one goal against the other side in the Barclays WSL. Simon netted twice in Spurs’ 4-0 home win against Albion in February.
