Adam Lallana fired in his first goal for Albion on Saturday against Leicester City.

Dean Hammond is not surprised that former team-mate Adam Lallana became a Premier League and Champions League winner.

The pair played integral roles for Southampton when they won back-to-back promotions between 2010-2012 from League One to the Premier League, and Hammond can't think of anyone better that he played alongside.

“When I went to Southampton the coaches and the managers spoke very highly of Adam. He was a fantastic individual, but once he learned about football and had that deeper understanding his career thrived.

“I have been lucky enough to play with some great players, but he is either in the top two, or the best player I have played alongside. His balance on the ball, his awareness, he can use both feet and he's very intelligent. He's gone onto have a great career.

“Unfortunately for him he had so many injuries at Liverpool, because I absolutely believe he would have played a bigger part at the club even though he won the Premier League and the Champions League. He could have become a more established player if he hadn't had those issues.”

Lallana ranks alongside some of the big names Hammond played with at Leicester City, as well as one other Albion man.

“The three best players I have played alongside are Jamie Vardy, Riyad Mahrez and Adam Lallana, but that's not in order. But then Vicente when I was at Brighton was a joke, he was some player.

Dean Hammond said it was 'a joke' how good Vicente Rodriguez was.

“The best players in the world always have time and space on the ball and that's not because nobody wanted to go near them, it was because players like that play the game like it's the Matrix and Vicente was like that.

“They slow everything down and everything around them slows down, but for them it's all at normal speed. Vicente could dribble past players, he had a burst of pace, good passing and great vision.

“The days he trained he was the best player on the training field. The games he played, he was the best player on the pitch by far.”
