London calling for Kayal

Beram Kayal is relishing his time at Championship side Charlton Athletic so far this season, and paid tribute to the mood within the dressing room at The Valley. The midfielder joined the Addicks on a season-long loan at the end of August, and after overcoming an early injury has been involved in the side’s last three contests.

The Israeli international recently turned out three times in a week for the south Londoners - a win over Derby County at The Valley, a narrow loss to Bristol City and a 2-2 stalemate away to West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns.

He said, “It was tough at first because I had a small injury at the start so I couldn’t get into the rhythm of playing right away - but I’m back and fit again now and have been in the squad for the last few matches, so I want to get a run of matches under my belt.

“The mood in the changing room has been really good and all the lads are positive and hungry to do well in the league.

“They had a good feel that carried over from last season which is what you usually get from promotion. You want to keep that going and we’ve had a good start, we’re in a good position in the league and know we can get better.”

Charlton won promotion from League One via the play-offs last term, and Kayal spoke about what attracted him to the capital.

“I had a great time in Brighton and it’s been my favourite place in my career so far, “ he continued.

“But I wanted to play matches regularly at my age and there’s a lot of really good competition at Brighton. When I spoke with Lee Bowyer he told me that I would get that opportunity at Charlton every week and that’s what I wanted.

“It’s a really good club with a lot of history. The fans are incredible and have been brilliant during my time here, and I’m just enjoying my time playing every week.”

Manager Lee Bowyer made nearly 50 league appearances for the Addicks from 1994 to 1996, starting his career in south London before making the switch north to Leeds United - a transfer fee which set a new record for a British teenager.

Kayal discussed his manager’s qualities and praised the relationship he has with all aspects of the football club.

“He’s a very passionate character who is close with the supporters - they feel a real connection with him.

“The manager is young and wants to do well, he got the side promoted last year and he’s really popular around all areas of the club, both on and off the field.

“The players fully believe in him too, it’s great to see a former footballer come into management and do so well with a project.

“We have a young group who want to do well and so we’ll just keep working hard and see where we can go. If we stick together and keep giving everything then who knows where it can take us.”
