The defender was included in the Three Lions’ camps in both October and November last season, making his debut against the USA at Wembley Stadium, and he spoke about his ambitions to return to the fold in the future.

He said, “I want to keep performing as well as I can and then see where we go from there.

“It was something I really enjoyed before and it was a dream come true to be included, hopefully one day I’ll be back in there.

“I just have to keep focusing on making sure I’m the best I can be every week for Brighton. I’d like to think I’m doing that at the moment, so I’ll continue that throughout this season and see what happens.”

The captain also spoke about the effect that Graham Potter has had on him so far this term, praising the head coach’s impact on both his own game and the style of the side as a whole.

“We’re flexible and it’s something I’m really enjoying it - he’s going to bring my game on massively,” he continued.

“I think that will be the case for the whole side, but from my perspective he’s definitely had an impact - hopefully he can continue to coach me and guide me to becoming a better player.

“We all work hard under him every day in training, and from a defender’s perspective you can see what we want to do and how we are comfortable playing it out from the back.”

The Seagulls have 12 points from their opening ten league matches so far this term, and Dunk went on to assess the team’s fortunes as a whole ahead of this weekend’s game with Norwich City at the Amex.

“I think we’ve done okay so far, but I also think we could have done better too because we’ve been in with a real chance of getting something from all of our matches so far.

“Football works like that sometimes, but you can see that we’re improving each week and it’s a long season. We know what we want to do and how we want to do it, and we’ll keep working hard to reach that.

“We showed it when we went a man down against Aston Villa the other week, we moved the ball well and at times they still couldn’t get near us. This weekend we got a last minute goal ourselves and got our rewards, so we’ll keep improving and see where it takes us.”
