Potter: More to come from March

The 2019/20 season has seen a change in position for Solly March, with the 25-year-old reverting to a wing-back role for the Seagulls, but head coach Graham Potter insists the home-grown talent is yet to reach his full potential.

March played the full 90 minutes against West Ham United on Saturday afternoon, linking up well with goalscorer Leandro Trossard down the left-hand side, and Potter believes Albion’s number 20 is adapting well.

He said, “He’s taken to the position really well. Dan [Burn], behind him, helps as well. Dan takes responsibility there, in terms of going out and defending the wide area.

“What he’s always had as a wide man is the desire to defend. He’s always been that type of player — covering the ground and going box to box.

“Solly can improve, though. He’s got great talent and quality, but he’s not at the top of his potential. My job is to help him reach that.

“He’s got the attributes and mentality, and I was impressed by how he went about his work, but I know he can also do better.”

For West Ham’s visit over the weekend, Potter made one change to the line-up that beat Watford on the opening day, with Trossard replacing Jurgen Locadia in Albion’s front three.

Potter explained his thinking behind switching the players, and admitted the selection headaches are something he’s fortunate to have.

“It’s the manager’s problem of having players that probably feel they deserve to play. Jurgen will have been disappointed not to play.

“Away from home, in our first game against Watford, Jurgen’s physicality, and the ability to go more direct if we needed to, was the thinking for that game.

“Leo in pre-season did well, and we felt that against West Ham, with their midfield, it made more sense to have more of a midfield player than a forward in there.

“I’m lucky that that I’ve got options and long may that continue.”
