Graham Potter highlighted the positive reaction shown by his players in this afternoon’s 1-1 draw against West Ham United, as Albion initially thought they’d taken the lead, before Leandro Trossard’s debut goal levelled the game.

The Belgian winger had to wait a while longer to open his Albion account, after his first-half goal was ruled out after a VAR check, and Potter applauded his side for bouncing back after riding a rollercoaster of emotions.

He said, “It was a positive performance for us. I’m disappointed with just the one [point], but that’s life and you have to take that sometimes.

“The players responded from the disappointment of getting a goal that wasn’t a goal, and then going a goal down as well.

“They kept going and showed some really good play and personality on the pitch. I thought the performance was really, really good, to be honest.

“I think we played better than we did last week, but we didn’t get the win and you have to just take it and move forward.”

After being questioned about Trossard’s Premier League debut, Albion’s head coach commented on the 24-year-old’s display, before assessing his side’s overall performance against the Hammers, who took the lead thanks to Javier Hernandez’s goal.

“Leo had some good opportunities and got into some good spaces,” he continued. “He had a goal disallowed and another good opportunity to score.

“He had a good chance before their goal, but it was nice for him to get his goal at the third attempt. He linked up the play well and worked hard for the team.

“We had a couple of chances and obviously a goal disallowed, but overall the performance level was really good.

“The players showed real personality on the pitch and you can see what we’re trying to do. They executed things as well as they could, but we know we can still improve.”

The result took Albion’s tally to four points after the opening-day victory at Watford last weekend, and although Potter admitted it’s been a pleasing start, he was keen to look forward.

“It’s just the start. We’ve got a long way to go and we need to keep going, but the signs are good. The spirit of the players and what they’re trying to do is first class.

“Four points from two games is good in terms of a points return, but the performances are the thing we want to try and improve and focus on.”
