Merricks ready for City challenges

Albion return to action today as they host Manchester City at Broadfield Stadium in the WSL.

Despite the 3-1 defeat at Kingsmeadow on Wednesday against Chelsea, the squad will take encouragement from their second-half fightback against the champions as they welcome Gareth Taylor and his third-placed team.

Interim head coach Amy Merricks said, "I was really proud with how the team approached the game in terms of their attitude - we're going to need more of that.

"I think it's important to recognise that we have to be disciplined in every game to compete in this league and climb the table. I don't mean that in a negative way I mean that in a positive way and I think that will bring the best out of us."

Victoria Williams returned to the' starting line-up on Wednesday and Merricks outlined her value to the squad.

"She's an excellent leader and a really good defender who leads the backline well. We know what we get with Victoria and I thought she did very well on Wednesday," she said. "She's a great character to have around and has leadership qualities. She's a valued member of this squad and will continue to be."

Merricks insists that her Albion side are here to compete and she wants to build momentum as they prepare for a challenging run of games starting against City.

"Something very important for us to take forward is that we're not just in this league to take part, we're here to compete. We appreciate that this game is going to be tough, but we are looking to compete from minute one until the end.

Merricks manage Albion against City for second time this season

"We have to focus on our performance and build on those moments from Chelsea that were really good and take that with us.

"We want to embrace the challenge that is ahead of us and I want the team to express themselves no matter who we're playing against. We'll be diligent in our preparation and put our best team out to get the points."

Merricks also took time to thank her backroom team after she took over on Monday following the departure of former head coach Jens Scheuer.

"The staff have been tremendous," she added. "There are too many people to mention and it's really important for me that we work together. I've only got one set of eyes and they bring so much knowledge and experience with them in their roles - we're going to need that going forward.

"I really want to enable others to lead and have a positive impact on the group. It's not about me, it's about the team and how we can get the best out of them. The staff have been magnificent and long may it continue."
