Not even a stomach bug in the build-up to the match was going to stop Danny Welbeck playing a pivotal part in Sunday’s win over Manchester United.

After the 2-1 victory over his former club at Old Trafford, Danny revealed that his participation had been in doubt.

“I’ve been working hard and pre-season went well and I feel good, I feel strong. Unfortunately, in midweek I got a stomach bug off my daughter, which knocked a few kilograms off me! I was bit worried about Sunday, but I felt good out there and it was a great start to the season. I thought the group were tremendous and we’re delighted.”

PL Highlights: Man Utd 1 Albion 2

Welbeck was a threat throughout as Albion led 2-0 at the break through two goals from Pascal Gross.

“I thought we were brilliant in the first half and caused them so many problems. It was inevitable that United would respond in the second half but I thought we handled it pretty well.

“It is the first time in Brighton’s history that we’ve won at Old Trafford, and I’m pleased to be a part of that and hopefully we can win many more games this season.”

Welbeck: Lallana's experience is vital

Welbeck believes our long-term future is bright despite the loss of two key players in Yves Bissouma and Marc Cucurella during the summer.

“We know the position we find ourselves in. We’ve lost two very good players and I’m really happy for them. It’s a bit sad for us, but we move on and keep improving. We are developing as a club and a team and we’re only going to get better.”
