Danny Welbeck admitted he and his team-mates were frustrated after letting a 2-0 lead slip against Southampton on Sunday.

Welbeck scored his fourth of the season with Albion’s fastest Premier League goal and an own goal doubled their lead before James Ward-Prowse scored twice either side of the break to level it up.

The point lifted Albion up to 11th and they need one point from their final four games to set a new points record in the Premier League, having moved onto 41.

But Welbeck felt after their strong first-half showing that Albion could have ended their wait for a home win which stretched back to Boxing Day.

“We’ve gone 2-0 up but the fact they got one back just before half-time helped them,” said Welbeck. “We came out in the second half and had to suffer a bit, but we got back into the game, showed a bit of character and in the end looked more likely to win. It’s disappointing because we want to be picking up three points.

“We’ve not done well enough in front of goal at home this season, so it was important to get off to a good start. We did that and it gave us a bit more confidence going forward and a belief that we could take our chances. We’re obviously very disappointed not to come away with the victory.”

Having scored once, Welbeck started and nearly finished the move which ended with Mohammed Salisu scoring an own goal.

“He’s nicked it right off my foot!” added Welbeck, who was named man of the match. “It was good build-up play and I was a bit disappointed that he got there before me, but the main thing was it went into the back of the net to give us a two-goal lead.

"But 2-0 is an awkward scoreline and when they scored their first it made it more difficult. We have to learn from it and take it in our stride but we did enough to win so it is disappointing.”

Welbeck says Albion want to finish the season strongly and make some history. “Getting the [points] record is massive, not just for the fans and the club," he added. "We players want to finish as high up the table with as many points as possible so the next four are very big games for us.”
