Fliss Gibbons has said Albion can compete with the big guns this season.

Fliss Gibbons says Albion can hold their own against the top teams in the Women’s Super League, ahead of this afternoon’s game against leaders Arsenal.

She said, “Sometimes we have been written off before we have even kicked a ball but hopefully we are changing people’s mentality now.

“We have had a lot of discussions in pre-season about how we want to come across as a team and how we want to come across as individuals. Everyone is buying into that philosophy and that culture.

“We’ve said we want to go into games against the so-called bigger teams with the mentality that we have got nothing to lose.

“We want to come out of them showing that we can compete. It’s good to set those standards early in the season.”

Today’s visitors Arsenal are three times winners of the WSL – their most recent title coming in 2018/19.

Strikers Jill Roord and Viviane Miedema already have 11 goals between them from their opening three league games, but Gibbons believes they can cause the Gunners problems.

“We know that we have got enough quality in the side to take on Arsenal and really give them a good game and we will be looking to get a result.

Hope Wins Manager of the Month

“We want to put in performances that move us away from the bottom of the table where we have finished in previous seasons. The Man City game showed that we can compete with the teams that have consistently finished in the top four and the top two.

“Regardless of Arsenal’s previous results, we believe we can get something out of the game. We do a lot of work off the pitch so we know a lot about their style of play and we have experience of playing them before. But we are under no illusions that they’re a team of world class players.

“We take a lot of pride in being well-drilled and organised. It’s going to be difficult to keep them at bay, but we have shown we can do it.”
