Graham Potter watches on at Goodison Park.

Graham Potter admitted Albion made ‘too many errors’ as they succumbed to a 4-2 defeat to Premier League leaders Everton at Goodison Park.

Having gone 1-0 down to Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s header, Neal Maupay got the visitors back on level terms after a Jordan Pickford error, but Albion were a goal down again before the break when Yerry Mina nodded home.

James Rodriguez extended Everton’s lead just after the restart from close range and scored a fourth before Yves Bissouma got his second goal for Albion in stoppage time.

Potter said, “It’s frustrating – the scoreline is disappointing from our perspective. In the first half we played well and got back into the game. I thought we were the better team at that point.

“Their second goal just before half-time is a bit of a blow for us, then we didn’t start the second half very well – we made some poor decisions in terms of inviting a bit of pressure on and that results in the third goal.

“For the fourth one we are trying to push forward for a way back into the game and they hit us on the counter. So the score-line is a bit heavy. In terms of shots and chances we did quite well, but we conceded four and that’s a problem.

Potter's Everton verdict

“They have invested quite a lot of money over the last four years, so they have got a very deep squad and some really good players.” Potter added. “At the top end of the pitch they have got players that can hurt you in different ways.

“So ultimately that’s the challenge for us to think differently and combat that. I thought we did some things well and we were in the game, but there were too many errors and this type of quality can create a difficult afternoon for you.

“Performance-wise heading into the international break we have been quite good, but points-wise we’re a little bit disappointed to only have three because we deserved a bit more. But that’s the challenge for us, we have to turn those good performances into results. We have to keep improving.”
