The club has been shortlisted for a Green Heart Hero Award, as a result of the “excellent work being done to help create a cleaner, greener future."

Albion are listed in the Sustainability in Sport category, and will be present next week at the Houses of Parliament for the special event being hosted by Sky News presenter Kay Burley.

Chief executive Paul Barber commented, “We are delighted to see our efforts being recognised in this area. We are working hard to minimise our impact on the environment.

"We have a genuine commitment to environmental sustainability. We recently published our first environmental policy and we are taking pro-active steps to minimise energy use and reinforce our commitment to carbon offset.”

Part of Albion’s commitment involves reducing the amount of single-use plastics, and a number of simple but effective changes have been implemented at both the American Express Community Stadium and at the American Express Elite Football Performance Centre to this effect.

In terms of energy usage, since December 2019 the club has solely used green electricity and has taken a number of steps to carbon offset its gas usage.

One of those initiatives has been to work alongside local schools to plant 1,200 trees in the local area surrounding the stadium.

The club’s groundstaff only use electric mowers to maintain the pitches at both the American Express Community Stadium and the American Express Elite Football Performance Centre.

Environmental concerns also extend to supporters making their way to the stadium, with the club continuing to provide a free matchday travel scheme to all fans. In total, more than 80% of matchday visitors used a sustainable means of transport in 2018/19.

Barber added, “Everyone at Brighton & Hove Albion will continue to work closely with our various partners and stakeholders to ensure we are as environmentally sustainable as possible.

“We are conscious of the issues surrounding climate change and environmental sustainability. As a club, we can make a difference with our own initiatives both now and in the future and we are totally committed to doing so.”
