The result moved Albion six points clear of the Reds at the bottom of the Barclays FA Women’s Super league table, and Powell explained that the victory was even more significant following Bristol City’s surprise 1-0 victory over Manchester United earlier in the day.

She said, “It was a massive win for us and we needed that after Bristol City won. We knew it was going to be an absolute dogfight today, and credit to Liverpool because they came and tried to win the game.

“Once we scored, it was about being firm and resolute and we did that. We were relieved come the end of the game, because the players worked so hard for it.

“We conceded in the last minute in our previous home game against Reading and late on against Chelsea too, so the fact that we didn’t do that when, our backs were against the wall, was very pleasing.”

Aileen Whelan put Albion in front with a close-range finish.

The Albion manager praised the determination which her players showed to get the result, but stressed the fight at the bottom of the table is not over.

“They showed character and togetherness, which is something we spoke about," added Powell. "They showed that they could fight when they needed to, and it isn’t always about trying to win pretty.

“We’ve still got everything to play for, because if you had said before the game that Bristol City would beat Manchester United, everybody would probably have chuckled.

“That’s no disrespect to Bristol, and all this win does is put us three points ahead of where we were before today.”

Lea Le Garrec takes on the Liverpool defence.

Following today’s match, Albion are now exactly halfway through their FAWSL campaign, and Powell feels her side have progressed compared to this stage last year.

“I’m pleased with the way we conducted ourselves, and we came back at the start of the season feeling fitter, stronger and faster," she added.

“Everybody has put in a shift and I’m pleased with where we are, even though I’d like to be higher in the table. We’ve dropped some crucial points, but the main thing is that we’re not bottom of the league.”
