Fiskerstrand: This was too good to turn down

New Albion goalkeeper Cecilie Fiskerstrand says the opportunity to be part of the increasing profile of the women’s game in England was too good to turn down, after she signed a one-and-a-half-year deal with the club.

Cecilie Fiskerstrand signs for Albion.

The 23-year-old signed a deal with Albion until 30th June 2021, and she says the infrastructure which is in place at the club and the way in which the Barclays FA Women’s Super League is going from strength to strength, convinced her to join.

She said, “There were many reasons why I signed here. I’ve heard so many nice things about the club, the city and the development of women’s football in England. I really wanted to be a part of that.

“It’s a club with a great structure, brilliant facilities, and the girls are a great bunch of people. Hope [Powell] was another big reason why I signed here, and she made a great impression on me as both a coach and a person.

“So many people from the national team are coming to England, and it’s exciting to see that grounds are being filled up and all of the big men’s clubs are backing their women’s teams.

“It’s a great thing to be a part of what’s happening in this country right now.”

Fiskerstrand talked about the prospect of linking up with other Norwegian players in the league, and cannot wait to work with fellow shot-stoppers Megan Walsh, Sophie Harris, and goalkeeper coach Alex Penny.

“One of my best friends Kristine Leine, plays for Reading, and I have spoken to almost all of the other girls that play on the national team. They all spoke very highly of the league, the teams and the culture.

“There are a lot of good goalkeepers in this team, but competition is good and it will help me and them develop.

“I’m really looking forward to working with Alex too, and he was one of the main reasons why I came here. He seems like a really good goalkeeping coach and a nice person.”

Albion have completed the signing of Cecilie Fiskerstrand.

Finally, the shot-stopper highlighted her aims for the season, and hopes to bring her big-game experience to the team.

“I’ve played in a lot of big matches, and when you’ve played for a team like LSK, you get to play in the Champions League. We played against the likes of Barcelona and Man City.

“This season, the biggest goal is to stay in this league. I want to help the team develop wherever I can, and I want to develop as a player too.”
