Potter commented on the impressive coaching pathway which Lampard has already undertaken and feels that his experiences at the very highest level can only stand him in good stead.

He said, “He was a top player that had a fantastic career, and he’s also an intelligent guy that knows the game well and is very articulate.

“He’s had experiences in the Championship too, which is going to help him. He knows a lot about Chelsea, and I’ve been very impressed by his progress.

“The very top players have the understanding and experience from playing at that level. It’s exciting from a football person’s perspective that the likes of Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard are coaching in the game and being managers.

“They have the potential to be top coaches, and if they continue to have the right mind set, then I’m sure they can have good careers."

Wednesday’s game continues a hectic festive schedule for Potter’s men following Saturday’s 2-0 win over Bournemouth, and the Seagulls boss spoke about the balance of not changing a winning team as opposed to fielding a line-up that’s best equipped to deal with Chelsea’s strengths.

“I understand that’s an argument [not changing a winning team] and there’s also one which says that every game is different, so you have to adapt to how you want to play.

“It would be nice to just pick the same 11, but the reality of that is not quite so easy. We’ll see how the guys recover, who’s available and how we want to play against Chelsea. We’ll then take it from there.”

Aaron Mooy was one of those players who played a starring role in that 2-0 win over the Cherries, and the Albion head coach applauded the midfielder’s progress this season.

“He’s done really well with us. What he did some 30 hours after the Tottenham game was incredible, and the same goes with Dan Burn and Shane Duffy, in terms of the professionalism they showed. We were delighted with them.

“Aaron is someone that likes to play behind the lines, which some players may find difficult. He sees the game well enough to understand when he’s in good space and waits for the ball to come to him. He also has team-mates that balance off well with him.”
