Maupay put in another tireless 90-minute shift against the Toffees, and the Albion head coach highlighted his bravery in stepping up to take the equalising penalty to level the scores at 2-2.

He said, “It was a long wait for him to take the penalty and with all that was going on, he had the courage and quality to go and take it.

“There’s no doubt from our perspective in terms of the quality that he’s got. What I was really pleased with was his work for the team, which was amazing.

Graham Potter praised Neal Maupay's performance.

“He was brilliant in terms of his out of possession and defensive work when we were up against it. I felt that he gave everything, and I’m really pleased for him.

“He’s desperate to play for us in the Premier League, and is proud to be here. He wants to do his work for the team, and is someone that can finish, drop in, run in behind, and hold defenders off.

“There is a step up that you have to go through from the Championship to the Premier League but when you’ve got his personality, there is no problem.”

Another positive from Saturday’s scintillating win was the return of Leandro Trossard from the bench, and Potter was pleased to utilise the Belgian’s strengths in the final 25 minutes of the match.

“I spoke with him in the week and he felt ready. I know that he’s been out since the end of August, and that this would be a really tough and tense game,” he continued.

“We might have to do a lot of work out of possession and thinking of Leo, maybe the last 25 minutes is better than the first 65, because he wasn’t going to play 90 minutes.

“We have to build his minutes up, but that’s his first 30 minutes in a couple of months, so I’m delighted with him.”

Ezequiel Schelotto also came back into the fold following a long lay-off with a knee injury, and Potter spoke about the defender’s tremendous determination to put on an Albion shirt again for the first time since May 2018.

“He’s done amazingly well and got back to action so quickly. We’ve had to hold him back to be honest, as he was looking at me as if I’m the worst person in the world for not getting him in the squad a bit sooner.

“He’s fighting every day, is a charismatic player, and brings a lot of energy down that side.

"In terms of the profile of a player down that side, he is someone that can get up and down well, and has good pace to threaten their backline. He also does his defensive work, so it’s very pleasing to have two good guys competing for those two positions.”
