Late goal joy for Albion prospect

While Albion were enduring their own stoppage-time agony at Villa Park in the second city, Max Sanders was helping inflict a similar feeling on Portsmouth as he popped up with a late assist.

The midfielder was part of the AFC Wimbledon side that secured a fourth straight win in all competitions on Saturday, and he spoke about another good result for the Dons as they continued their impressive recent form.

He said, “It was a great day and an unbelievable feeling, we played really well on the day, and to be able to contribute to that was fantastic.

“It was a bit of a backs against the wall performance to be honest, but we defended really well.

“We had a chance to get the ball in the box late on and one of our defenders managed to get his head to it, so it was great, and we were all buzzing – we’re in good form at the moment and feel good.”

AFC Wimbledon have found the net 13 times in their last five matches, and Sanders emphasised how happy and settled he currently feels out on loan.

“I thought the Southend game was probably my best so far, but the one against Portsmouth was obviously a win over a big club in the division,” he continued.

“I was included in the Football League Paper’s ‘Team of the Week’ too, and it’s always nice to get that sort of praise and recognition.

“I’m feeling good at the moment and feel as though I’m playing well, I fully understand my role in the side now too and I want to keep that going.

“I’ve come quite a way recently, I was on the bench for the first few matches after I joined, but since I’ve come into the team I’ve managed to do well. I just have to keep doing as the manager asks and getting good results, then my performances will take care of themselves.”

The Dons travel to face Burton Albion this evening looking to continue their recent impressive run of form, and the 20-year-old says that the result at the weekend has given the side another confidence boost ahead of the game in the Midlands.

“It’s always nice to be part of a winning changing room, we’re out of the bottom three now and to beat a side like Portsmouth who did so well last term is massive.

“It showed us that we can beat that sort of side and compete at this level, it’s a tight group of teams down around us in the table, and now we’re definitely looking up the league.”
