Albion finish top of Group I with seven points.

Our under-21s qualified for the EFL Trophy knockout stages for the first time in four years with a 4-2 penalty shootout win against Forest Green Rovers at The New Lawn on Tuesday.

After both teams played out a goalless draw in normal time, Mark O'Mahony, Jack Hinchy, Samy Chouchane and substitute Jamie Mullins scored from 12 yards, with goalkeeper Tom McGill saving two spot-kicks against the League Two side.

The result meant Shannon Ruth's side picked up one point for the stalemate after 90 minutes and an extra one for the shootout triumph, so both they and Forest Green are into the round of 32 draw.

Imari Samuels plays a pass inside.

Albion, who made four changes from the side that beat Aston Villa 2-1 in Premier League 2 on Friday, began the game on the front foot, with Ruairi McConville heading wide Chouchane's lofted cross from 10 yards out.

However, after shading the opening 15 minutes, the hosts began to turn the screw, and the visitors, who saw Ben Jackson spurn a good headed chance from Luca Barrington's dangerous corner, were off colour.

Former Albion midfielder Teddy Jenks nearly gave Forest Green the lead, only for his shot from inside the box to deflect just past the post and McGill was tested by efforts from Harvey Bunker and Tyrese Omotoye.

Leigh Kavanagh battles for possession.

Ruth’s team would have been grateful for the half time whistle as they were restricted to just 39% possession and three shots to the home side's nine.

The game's pedestrian pace continued at the start of the second half as both teams struggled to string any quality phases of play together.

Benicio Baker-Boaitey registered Albion's first shot on target in the 50th minute, but his strike was comfortably claimed by keeper Jamie Searle.

The introduction of Mullins and Louis Flower provided the under-21s with a bit more zip but both sets of players seemed content to pick up a point.

Tom McGill brilliantly saved two penalties in the shootout.

Penalties followed and after losing to Shrewsbury Town in a penalty shootout earlier this season in this competition, Albion scored all four of their spotkicks, meaning they could not be overhauled by the Shrews or Walsall, who face each other next week.

Starting XI: McGill, Nilsson, Kavanagh, Jackson (Mullins 56), Samuels, McConville, Hinchy, Chouchane, Barrington (Slater 87), Baker-Boaitey (Flower 70), O'Mahony

Subs not used: Cahill, Slater, Peart, Atom, Knight.
