Elisabeth Terland scored her seventh goal of the season at Spurs last Saturday.

Albion play the first of three home games between now and the end of the Barclays WSL season on Sunday when West Ham United visit the Broadfield Stadium, kick off 2pm.

Melissa Phillips' side will be hoping to complete their first double of the season, having defeated the Hammers 5-4 back in November.

View from the coach

Ahead of the game, Melissa Phillips said, "Every point counts at this stage. We were pleased to put in such a good performance against Spurs last Saturday, we created opportunities and had that belief to win. Performances are growing, which is the most important takeaway from the game.

"It's been a difficult season, but we're starting to build on who we want to be. We're after clean sheets and getting wins but we have to work on how we respond to going behind in games and other critical moments."

Previous meetings

Albion have won their last three WSL games against the Hammers. At Dagenham in November, when Amy Merricks was in caretaker charge, we won 5-4 thanks to goals from Danielle Carter (2), Elisabeth Terland, Vea Sarri and Jorja Fox. We met again at the Broadfield Stadium earlier this year when the teams drew 0-0 in the Conti Cup group stages but Albion won the penalty shoot-out.

West Ham are the only side Albion did the double over last season, winning both games 2-0. In the away fixture in March goals from Aileen Whelan and Inessa Kaagman did the trick while Kaagman and Geummin Lee scored in the victory at the Amex on the opening day of the season.

Albion will be aiming to win this fixture for the fifth successive time.

Stats and facts

  • Brighton lost three of their first four WSL games against West Ham United but have since won their last five games in a row against the Hammers.
  • West Ham United have lost their last two away WSL visits to Brighton, failing to score in both games. They had won their first two away games against the Seagulls in 2018-19 and 2019-20.
  • Brighton’s six WSL wins against West Ham are two more than they’ve managed against any other opponent (4 vs Birmingham).
  • West Ham are winless in all eight of their Women’s Super League games in 2023 (D2 L6) and are the only WSL side without a victory this year.
  • West Ham have never won a WSL game played in May (P5 D1 L4), failing to score in every game, one of which was a 4-0 defeat to Brighton in 2019.
  • Albion are the only side without a clean sheet in the WSL this season. Their run of conceding goals extends to last April, a run of 22 games. This is the joint longest run without a clean sheet in the history of the WSL, with Doncaster Belles (May 2011 – Sept 2012) and Birmingham (January – December 2021) also going 22 without a clean sheet.
  • Elisabeth Terland has scored in six of her last seven WSL starts for Albion, netting seven goals. Only Inessa Kaagman (8 in 2020-21) has ever scored more WSL goals in a season for Brighton than Terland this season.
  • Viviane Asseyi has had a hand in 47% of West Ham’s WSL goals this season, scoring six and assisting three of their 19 goals. She also netted a brace in their 5-4 defeat to Brighton in November in this season’s reverse fixture.
