Scheuer ready to Villa's challenges

Albion will host Villa in their first WSL match at Broadfield Stadium in 2023 on Sunday and head coach Jens Scheuer is eager to build on the squad's positive momentum following last week's 1-1 draw.

"For us, every point is important. There are five points between us and Leicester so it’s a better situation and an away point is always a big thing, especially against a top team like Aston Villa," he said.

"I was really impressed with my team in the second half. That was the way I want us to play. We also have to analyse what went wrong in the first half, it wasn’t what I expected. We have to kick on from the second half [performance] and hopefully we will do this on Sunday."

"It’s not a normal situation but it changes nothing to our preparation. We know their strengths and weaknesses, how they attack and how they defend. We knew this before the first game so nothing changes."

Scheuer and Kullberg's Aston Villa press conference

Scheuer gave an injury update ahead of the game as striker Elisabeth Terland makes positive strides to return to the pitch.

"Julia [Zigiotti] and Lee [Guemmin] have been training on their own today, so we will see how they trained on Saturday but hopefully they can play," added Scheuer. "Julia is our captain and had become a very important player for us. Elisabeth Terland is back in training. Villa is too soon but she is a great option after the international break."

Scheuer recognised the squad's position in WSL table needs to improve but insisted that the team are taking the challenge one match at a time.

"The table is only interesting if we are winning more games than losing and can improve our position," he said. "The only thing we think about is making sure we stay in the league and then we’ll start thinking about the future. The best thing for the whole group is to just think about the next game."
