Maya Le Tissier admitted Albion were below par against Birmingham on Saturday.

Maya Le Tissier says Albion will have to show a big improvement if they are to set a new WSL points record this season.

The Seagulls were beaten 3-1 at home by Birmingham City on Saturday and West Ham’s 2-1 win at Reading 24 hours later dropped them down to seventh with two games to go. On Saturday Albion head to Champions League chasers Manchester City before finishing the campaign at home to Everton on May 8.

“We have to regroup this week because there is a big incentive for us to finish the season strongly,” said Le Tissier.

“It’s a tough finish but we’re only three points off setting a new record (28) and we want to try and finish either sixth or higher than we did last season. There is still a lot to play for.”

WSL Highlights: Albion 1 Birmingham 3

Le Tissier gave credit to Saturday’s opponents who kept their survival hopes alive with only their second win of the season.

“I thought it was poor from us, we were really disappointed because we didn’t reach anywhere near the standards that we can,” she said. “Credit to Birmingham. They fought for every ball and we didn’t win enough one v ones.

“We got into a lot of good positions and need to be more clinical but it’s not just down to the forwards. We need to defend better, especially from set pieces, it was quite frustrating.”
