Evan Ferguson takes the acclaim after scoring against Palace

Albion’s under-23 side returned to winning ways as young striker Evan Ferguson found the target twice in a thrilling first half in Lancing to help his side to a 2-1 win.

The Irishman netted from the penalty spot and pounced on another Palace error to help Andrew Crofts’ side to all three points.

The victory moves the side within touching distance of top spot in the Premier League 2 table and builds on the solid display against Forest Green Rovers in midweek.

In a free-flowing start with good passages of play from both sides, it was Albion who created the game’s opening chance when Ferguson’s low drive was comfortable held by Palace keeper Joe Whitworth.

Albion continued on the front foot and were rewarded in the 10th minute when Jay Rich-Baghuelou handled just inside in the box. Referee Jason Richardson had no hesitation in pointing to the spot and this time Ferguson got the better of Whitworth, drilling his spot-kick low inside the keeper’s right-hand post.

Palace responded well, flashing an effort across the face of goal, but it was Albion who should have doubled their lead on 20 minutes when Andrew Moran teed up Marc Leonard, but the skipper’s effort came back off the bar.

The hosts were all smiles moments later though when Rich-Baghuelou had another moment to forget. His weak back-pass was intercepted by Ferguson and the young Irishman made no mistake to net his second of the evening.

Palace were architects of their own downfall and Leonard went close to putting the game out of sight when he pounced on a loose ball back into his box by Sean Robertson. Moran also produced a moment of individual class but having honed in on goal, his effort was saved by the feet of Whitworth.

Again, Palace fought back and with half an hour on the clock some last-ditch tackling by the Albion rearguard kept out forward Scott Banks while Robertson broke forward in the very next attack, only to fire into the side netting.

The visitors then found the lifeline they were searching for a minute before half time when Jesurun Rak-Sakyi side-footed home after Banks had seen his close-range effort blocked.

Albion had the better of the second-half’s opening exchanges. Leonard fired over the bar on 50 minutes, following good work down the right by Odel Offiah, and he then saw an effort well beaten out by Whitworth moments later.

Palace then missed a golden opportunity to equalise when Banks squared the ball to Rob Street. His effort was well saved by Tom McGill but Rak-Sakyi somehow put the rebound wide with the goal gaping.

It proved to be one-way traffic for a while as the Eagles searched for a second, but the Albion defence, and McGill, stood firm.

The hosts then found their momentum again. Moran had claims for penalty waved away in the closing ten minutes while sub Cameron Peupion fired straight at Whitworth.

There was time for a red card for Palace sub Jack Roles in the closing stages as frustrations boiled over but Albion saw the game out to pick up an excellent three points.

Albion: McGill, Offiah, Tsoungui, Turns, Furlong, Dicker, Spong, Miller (Peupion 75), Moran, Leonard, Ferguson (Tolaj 75). Subs not used: Desbois, Packham, Hinchy
