Hope Powell was delighted to finish the season with a victory

Hope Powell expressed her delight after a 3-1 win over Bristol City secured a highest-ever Barclays FA Women's Super League finish for Albion.

Goals from Maya Le Tissier, Lee Geum-Min and Inessa Kaagman ensured they finished sixth and condemned City to relegation.

She said, “It’s only really our second season in the WSL as last season was curtailed and if you look at the teams we have beaten this year and the teams we have finished higher than, we are really delighted -  sixth is a real achievement for us.

“Losing 3-0 to Bristol City in January was a real low point. Hindsight is a wonderful thing and I can stand here now and say it really felt like a turning point.

“It made us take a really good look at ourselves and demand a bit more. The players and staff have fantastic to ensure that we did everything within our power to get better.

We took the challenges on, the first one being [the 2-1 win at champions] Chelsea and we rolled with that. That gave us some confidence and every player has stepped up and tried to perform, which has got us to sixth in the league. For us, that is fantastic and we’re very delighted.”

Asked about today’s win, Powell added: “I thought we executed our game-plan. We knew what Bristol City were going to bring and that it would be a difficult contest. We wanted to manage the game, stay calm and not be drawn into a fight and I thought we played some nice football.

“The fact we took the lead made us a bit calmer but they came back at us, and again when we went two goals up. Credit to Bristol City, they’re a decent side with a lot of spirit but overall I thought we were the better side and deserved to win.”
