Graham Potter reflected on a 'sore afternoon' for his side as Albion went down 1-0 to West Brom at the Hawthorns.

Pascal Gross and Danny Welbeck both struck the woodwork from the penalty spot and skipper Lewis Dunk had a free kick controversially disallowed in the first half.

“It's a sore afternoon for us,” he said. “We only have ourselves to blame. We had other chances in open play as well as the two penalties, but it's very much a game that has got away from us and that's very frustrating. It's been a very painful week, after what happened today and in the Crystal Palace game.”

Potter admitted he was confused by referee Lee Mason's decision to initially award Dunk's goal then change his mind before VAR Simon Hooper intervened and ruled it out.

Lewis Dunk fired in from a free-kick, but after a long delay had it ruled out by the VAR.

“As far as I know, Lewis was told he could take the free kick quickly and put the ball in the net. In between that there was another whistle but I don't know what that was for so it would be nice to get more clarification. We will try and get clarification but there is nothing we can do about it now.”

Including the missed penalties, Albion had 20 shots and six on target but could not find a way past man of the match Sam Johnstone.

Potter added, “We're not the only teams to miss penalties so we need to improve because you're not going to get two better chances. We pushed and pushed and had other opportunities.”

Albion remain four points clear of the bottom three with a home game against Leicester City coming next Saturday.

“You have to believe that if you keep working hard and doing the right things it will turn around for you. It's not so long that we went six games unbeaten but that is the nature of the Premier League.

“We have to keep fighting for the points we need from the 12 matches we have left. We're scratching our head how we have lost two games this week but we need to move forward.”
