Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Maty Ryan says the team must rediscover their defensive resoluteness after Saturday’s frustrating 3-1 defeat to Burnley.
The Seagulls shot-stopper was disappointed with the nature of all three Burnley goals, and believes it’s vital to bounce back in the next league match away at Leicester City on 26th February.
He said, "Defensively, we were too soft. Every goal that they scored and all their chances were created with far too much ease.
“When you defend that way you don't give yourselves a chance. The next test now is to show a bit of character and bounce back from this - it happens to the best teams in the world and every team out there.
"It's the momentum of the league and how it goes sometimes. One thing we've prided ourselves on is the strength of being at home and making the Amex a fortress.
"No doubt we will get back to our strengths and clean up the defensive side of things and be more stern at the back, the next one in the league is Leicester away and it's going to be important to show a reaction there.”
Ryan spoke of the need to improve at the back, and highlighted the ruthlessness of teams in the Premier League.
"All the time I've been here and long before that, I know the defensive structure has been the focal point of the team, which gives us our identity.
"There are still games to go, but we are giving them away too easily at the moment. A bit of bad luck as well, Dunky slipping, me slipping on the third one, and we turned the ball over far too cheaply on the second one. All of a sudden we are three on two at the back.
"It's just not good enough at this level and the teams in this league punish you."
The Australian admits that Albion are not having the rub of the green at the moment, but explained that hard graft is the only way to end the run of form.
"We’re having a bit of bad luck at the minute. Credit to them, we didn't have the answers for what they were throwing at us, which is disappointing.
“It’s a big disappointment which brings us back down to earth, and we need to keep working hard in order to get ourselves out of this little situation.”
