Hughton's Praise For Murray's Display

By James Hilsum • 03 September 2018

Brighton & Hove Albion manager Chris Hughton praised Glenn Murray’s performance in the 2-2 draw against Fulham, and the way he conducts himself both on and off the pitch.

Murray struck a brace to complete an impressive comeback from 2-0 down against the Cottagers, and Hughton commented on the frontman’s insatiable appetite to score goals.

He said, “He has a big desire to score goals; if there’s build-up play which works its way into the wide areas, then he’ll be in the box.

“Glenn can have a poor game where his touch is not so good, but then he will pop up with a goal. He gives himself the best opportunities to score goals but overall, he leads the line very well.

“We provide a platform for him, but it’s all about himself and his desire to do as well as he can for as long as he can.

“He’s a good professional, and certainly looks after himself with regard to how he goes about his life in terms of what he eats. He does everything right.”

The Seagulls boss dismissed the notion that the team are over-reliant on Murray, and commented on the increased competition for places upfront.

“At this moment he’s [Glenn] in the team ahead of [Jurgen] Locadia, who we like. He’s scoring goals but if Glenn is not playing so well or has an injury, then I’d like to think we have very good competition in Locadia or [Florin] Andone.

"All players like to be kept on their toes, and Glenn is no different to anyone else.

“It’s a long hard season and Glenn’s form, like anyone else, will be up and down. At the minute, he’s looking on top of his game.”

Hughton was also pleased with the manner in which Saturday’s draw with Fulham was achieved heading into the international break.

“We are on the back of what feels like a good result now, even though the changing room is quite disappointed because we have allowed ourselves to get into a situation where we could have won.

“With the players we’ve got coming back and the players who have not played, the international break is a good opportunity to work them.”
