Albion's Valley Visits

By Kieran Cleeves • 24 July 2018

Ahead of tonight’s friendly at The Valley, we take a look back at Brighton & Hove Albion’s most recent fixtures against Charlton Athletic in south London.

The Seagulls last played at The Valley in 2016 and Chris Hughton’s side were victorious, as they continued their charge for promotion at the top end of the Sky Bet Championship table.

Sam Baldock opened the scoring before Johann Berg Gudmundsson levelled for the Addicks, but second-half strikes from Jiri Skalak and Tomer Hemed (pen) secured all three points.

Hughton’s first league game in charge came at The Valley in January 2015 and Rohan Ince was the match-winner for the Seagulls, as the midfielder headed home at the back post to seal a 1-0 victory.

Albion tasted defeat on Boxing Day in 2013 but it was a highly-entertaining game at The Valley, as the ball struck the back of the net five times in a 3-2 scoreline.

Leonardo Ulloa broke the deadlock to put Albion 1-0 ahead, but two goals from Lawrie Wilson and a strike from Yann Kermorgant shot the Addicks into a comfortable lead, before Ulloa added a late consolation.

Wilson was also on target for Charlton in 2012 when the sides shared a 2-2 draw - the winger put the Addicks ahead before Craig Mackail-Smith’s leveller, and Kazenga LuaLua then cancelled out Bradley Pritchard’s goal after the break.

The Seagulls recorded a memorable 4-0 victory back in 2010 as Gus Poyet’s team charged towards the League One title - Inigo Calderon, Glenn Murray, LuaLua and Matt Sparrow were all on the scoresheet.

But it wasn’t the only time Calderon scored in a victory for Albion at The Valley in 2010, the Spanish full-back also fired home in a 2-1 victory in February, before Elliott Bennett extended the lead in the second half.
