Women Preview: Tottenham Hotspur V Albion

By Jake Ketley • 26 August 2018

Brighton & Hove Albion take on Tottenham Hotspur in the second group stage match of the FA WSL Continental Tyres Cup this afternoon, kick-off 1pm.

Albion opened their campaign last week with a 3-1 defeat to current FA Women’s Super League champions and SSE Women’s FA Cup holders Chelsea, with Aileen Whelan netting a second-half header for Albion, in between goals from Drew Spence and Fran Kirby for Chelsea, before substitute Bethany England rounding off the scoring.

On the other hand, today’s opponents Tottenham Hotspur played out a 1-1 draw against their fellow Londoners and Women’s Championship newcomers Crystal Palace. Spurs then lost out to the Eagles 5-4 on penalties, as Renee Hector was the only player not to convert her kick.

In the Continental Cup this year, all group stage matches that finish in a draw will result in a penalty shootout immediately after the final whistle. Each team will receive one point for the draw, with the winners of the spot-kicks receiving an extra point.

Four of Hope Powell’s summer signings started last week’s match with Jodie Brett coming off the bench. All five will be looking to stake a claim and build upon their performance in the season opener.

In the last meeting between the teams, Albion were 2-0 victors over Spurs, with England Under-20 international Chloe Peplow and Swede Amanda Nilden both on target in the FA WSL2 encounter. The team will be looking for a repeat of this performance this time around.

Albion supporters can follow live updates from the match via Twitter. A match report will be available on the website following the match.
