Hope Powell's side put in a strong performance against the reigning champions.

Hope Powell believes Albion should have taken a point from their Barclays FA Women's Super League match against Chelsea.

Sam Kerr's first-half goal was all that separated the sides in a close-run affair, with Inessa Kaagman having Albion's best opportunity of the match, only for her effort from 18 yards to cannon back off the crossbar in the second period.

Albion impressed throughout and despite a late rally couldn't get the goal their performance merited.

Powell said, “Apart from the result itself, I thought we did very, very well. The girls tried really hard to execute the game plan and for 99 per cent of the time they did apart from the goal.

Inessa Kaagman fires her effort against the crossbar.

“Credit to Chelsea, they have got top quality players, the goal and the execution from Sam Kerr was very good. That being said, I am very proud of the way we performed, I am just disappointed we didn't get something out of the game.

“I didn't have to say much at half-time, there was belief within the group. It was a case of keeping it tight for the first 15 minutes after the restart and then we had to try and get something out of the game. They managed that well. We moved and competed well where we could. I am just disappointed we didn’t come away with a point."

Ellie Brazil was back in the starting XI for the first time in 13 months after an injury lay-off.

“It's really good to have Ellie back. She is full of energy, can get in behind, she is quick and that poses a threat to the opposition and we tried to utilise that today.

“I'm delighted she got through a full 90 minutes today. It gives us strength in depth, which is something we need.”

Albion now focus their attention’s to next weekend's final fixture of the calendar year as they take on Reading at home next Sunday.

“We're doing well in the league, we're in a better place than we were this time last year.

“We didn't play well against Tottenham last week but we want to finish the year on a real high against Reading next week. It would be great to get three points before the Christmas break.”
