The players have been at home keeping in shape since 16th March, and the boss has stressed the importance of staying as positive as possible over the coming weeks.

He said, “Everybody needs to look out for each other during this time. It is a unique and challenging situation. We need to make sure we are keeping ourselves right on a physiological level.

“Isolation is not something as human beings that is easy for us to do but we are in this position and we have to look after each other and be together.

“If anything, the mental side of it is priority at the moment as opposed to the physical side – we are in a global crisis and the economy of this country is in lockdown, so it has an effect on people.

“I'm at home working and my wife is at home with the three kids. It is tough to have that adjustment.

“We are the same as families up and down the country. But we are fortunate, we are healthy, and we are okay. Our thoughts go to everyone on the frontline with the NHS who are working to get us out of this global situation.”

Potter & Barber press conference

Potter spoke to the media via video call on Thursday with deputy chairman and chief executive Paul Barber. He also discussed potential timescales of his players back up to match fitness when the season starts again.

Albion were last in action when they played out a 0-0 draw with Wolves at Molineux on 7th March.

He added, “There are a lot of question marks about the future, but I don’t think it will take too long to get the lads back up to speed. There are no games until 30th April which is quite some time without activity. It depends on when we can start training.

“You can drive yourself mad when you are in my position trying to second guess what is going to happen and clearly there are more important things that everyone needs to concentrate on.

“We just need to make sure when it is the right time for football so we can help the country and get back to playing, when we are ready. It might not be perfect, but we are in unprecedented times and so we have to adapt and be ready.”

The head coach also confirmed that all of his squad have remained in the UK and said how vital it is to keep in contact with them.

“Some of the players are away from their families and missing them and that's something we understand and can sympathise with, but we just felt that it was right for us to limit international travel and to stay at home and be safe here.”
