Albion fans are being asked to contribute towards a fundraising campaign for former midfielder Paul Linger.
Paul, who played 21 games for the club between 1997-98, faces life-saving surgery for pancreatic cancer this weekend after initially being given a terminal diagnosis.
So far, more than £36,000 has been raised for Paul, 45, who also played for Charlton Athletic and Leyton Orient and a host of non-league clubs.
Paul joined the Albion at one of the lowest points in our history when we were playing at Gillingham’s Priestfield Stadium after the sale of the Goldstone Ground.
When he made his debut against Shrewsbury in a goalless draw in December 1997 the attendance was just 1,917.
Paul’s friend Dan Jacobs said, “Paul, his family and I are truly humbled by the incredible generosity of friends, old and new, as well as to those of you who just did your bit because it felt the right thing to do.
“When we met Mr Imber, his surgeon, on Wednesday there was no hope. But you guys have ensured that the means are there for him to deliver on that hope. There's a tricky road ahead and Paul will need your support as he recovers, but for what you have done thank you. You are all amazing people.”
