Speaking ahead of Albion’s visit to Spurs on Boxing Day, the club’s head coach feels it is becoming an increasing problem in everyday life and it should not be down to the players on the pitch to make a decision on what steps should be taken.

Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger reported that he was subjected to racist abuse by two “idiots”, during yesterday’s match at Tottenham.

Players from both teams united to condemn racist discrimination, and Potter, who was at the match on a scouting mission, has added his support.

He said, “It is such a difficult and uncomfortable situation. I was in the ground and it wasn’t pleasant. It’s a sad state of affairs we’re in, but it’s a minority that are behaving unacceptably.

“But it’s how we tackle that which is so difficult. The players need to be supported from above because it’s hard to put them in those situations.

“It’s difficult enough to play Premier League football without these things happening and for the guys to understand what to do.

"Protocols are in place so the players can focus on the football the best they can.”
