The midfielder highlighted the 2-1 win at Arsenal earlier this month as an example of what Albion have achieved against the so-called ‘big six’, and is eagerly anticipating today’s contest with Jose Mourinho’s star-studded squad.

He said, “We’ve generally played well against the top teams in the division, and we’ve come up against many different players and styles of play in those games.

“We felt like the Arsenal result had been coming. Although we got beaten at Liverpool and Manchester City, we felt like we performed much better in those games and that we closed the gap on the sides above us. We want to take those performances into Spurs away.

“It would be a huge three points, but it doesn’t matter who’s in front of us because we need every point we can get. We’ll be looking to go to a tough place and pick up three points.”

Stephens also spoke about the return of Jose Mourinho to the Premier League, and is delighted to have someone of the Portuguese’s calibre managing in the division once again. He believes Spurs are showing signs of improvement under his guidance.

“I’ve always been a fan and his record speaks for itself. He’s a good character to have in this division, and I was glad to see him back," continued Stephens.

“They have a lot of the same players from when we played them last time, but we’ve got to reflect on what we can do as players and concentrate on what we do to affect the outcome of that game.

“They’re on an upward curve with a new manager, and it will still be a tough challenge.”

Following today’s match in north London, Albion are next in action in just two days time when AFC Bournemouth visit the Amex.

Stephens has become used to a hectic schedule over Christmas and New Year and says it’s a valuable chance to get build up some momentum very quickly.

“In the lower leagues or Championship, you’re used to playing six games in two weeks, so it’s not a massive surprise," he added.

“It’s a busy period, as there are a number of games in quick succession, but we do see it as a good opportunity to get some points on the board in a short space of time.”
