Simon Rusk’s side have made impressive progress in the competition to date, finishing top of the group following 2-0 wins over AFC Wimbledon and Southend United respectively, before they drew 1-1 with Leyton Orient at the Breyer Group Stadium.
The east Londoners subsequently won the penalty shootout 4-2 to claim the extra point on offer, but it wasn’t enough to knock Rusk’s team off top spot.
Newport advanced from their group in second place following an emphatic 7-4 victory away to Cheltenham Town in their final group contest.
