The captain grabbed his first goal of the season when he headed home from a corner during the second half, but it was the home side who took home three points thanks to goals from Andreas Pereira and Marcus Rashford, as well as a Davy Propper own-goal.

He admitted, “It’s a frustrating afternoon, we spoke at half-time about trying to get the third goal in the game to turn things around, but unfortunately we weren’t good enough today.

“We didn’t play like we know we can and we didn’t get control of the game. They took control and counter attacked us well and transitioned against us dangerously, it meant we struggled to get a grip on the game.

“We’ve come a long way as a team, but we already showed what we were about when we played away to Manchester City earlier in the season. That’s the most disappointing thing from today, the fact that we never really imposed ourselves on the match.”

Dunk: A frustrating day

The Seagulls came into Sunday’s game following back-to-back wins at the Amex over Everton and Norwich City respectively, and Dunk says that the team can be satisfied with their start to the season after 12 matches, despite the frustrating result against United.

“I think we’ve performed well away from home during the season so far and we’re still in a good position after 12 matches,” he continued.

“We have to keep going because we have a busy period coming up over Christmas. Overall we’ve had a good start, we’ve changed as a team and we’re still improving.

“But we’ve still got a long way to go and the season is only just getting started. It’s about continuing to work hard out on the training field every day to make sure we keep getting better and stay as high as we can in the table.”
