Graham Potter and Bjorn Hamberg salute the travelling fans on Saturday.

Second half goals from Jorginho and Willian separated the two sides in west London, with Albion hitting the bar moments before the latter sealed victory for the hosts, and the boss spoke about the significance of such moments in the top flight.

He said, “We have to keep working at what we’re doing and getting in good positions in the final third like we did today. It’s not easy to create chances in this league, but we deserved to score against Newcastle and didn’t.

“We could’ve got more points against Burnley and didn’t so it’s about fine margins. We have to accept that and try to get better.

“It’s about the decision-making and execution in the final third, which ultimately separates the sides.

“Sometimes we weren’t as positive as we could have been and could have pulled the trigger, but over the course of the game I still felt that the home side deserved to win.”

Potter's Chelsea verdict

The hosts picked up their first home league win of the campaign under new boss Frank Lampard, and the Seagulls head coach praised his side’s opposition for the way they won the contest in the end.

“We always set out to try and win the game and be positive, but at the same time you have to understand about the strengths of the opposition too, and Chelsea did make it difficult for us,” he continued.

“Sometimes you have to credit the opposition, I thought the home side were very good and Frank Lampard will have been pleased with what he saw - I don’t want to accept defeat, but sometimes you have to be honest and analyse the game before you consider how to move forward.

“The second half against Liverpool the week before probably gave them a lot of belief, because they went toe to toe with them and could consider themselves unlucky to lose.

“I won’t be too hard on my players because that would be unfair, we tried and did our best, but now we have to look forward to next weekend.”
