Powell: We've got more to gain

Hope Powell has encouraged her team to take a nothing-to-lose mentality against Arsenal, but says the task will be even more difficult than the visit of Chelsea to The People’s Pension Stadium nearly a fortnight ago.

Hope Powell speaks to the media ahead of Sunday's game against Arsenal.

Albion take on the reigning FAWSL champions this Sunday following the Gunners’ Champions League exploits on Thursday, and while Powell hopes this may have a bearing on the game, she recognised the strength in depth which the Gunners possess.

She said, “We have to recognise the quality that Chelsea have. They had more possession of the ball, and we worked very hard defensively.

“Arsenal is going to be a tougher proposition, as they will have more possession of the ball and are expected to win. But we’ve got more to gain than we’ve got to lose.

“I’m hoping that they’re slightly tired or fatigued after Thursday, but they’ve got a lot more depth in the squad than we have, and can bring on players that are like for like in terms of talent and ability.

“Irrespective of that, we hope it does us a favour. We just want to try and spoil their day somewhat.”

Powell's Arsenal press conference

The Albion head coach assessed the first two league games of the season, and Powell has been delighted with her side's progress compared to this time last year.

“It’s a 100 per cent improvement on last year and at this point, I’m relatively pleased. But I’m a bit disappointed that we didn’t get three points from Bristol and in the manner in which we drew with Chelsea due to their late equaliser.

“We all came off the pitch feeling bitterly disappointed, but if you had told me we’d have a point before we started, I’d be happy.”

The former England boss reiterated the club’s ambition to reach the top level, and highlighted the exciting times which lie ahead.

“The chairman, Paul Barber and everyone at the club hopes that we can reach that level one day. It’s a community club, they value the women’s game and want to support us.

“The infrastructure we’re starting to build is going to make this club a brilliant place to play football.”
