Propper: We’re improving every week

Albion midfielder Davy Propper believes his team-mates should have more to show for their early-season efforts, but says progress is being made every week and is confident that a positive season lies ahead.

The Seagulls come up against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge today, and the Dutchman assessed the side’s start to the campaign, which has produced six points and some promising displays under head coach Graham Potter.

He said, “I think everybody can see that we’ve changed the way we play. We’re more comfortable with the ball than before and have good organisation to play football.

“Most of the weeks we’ve improved with each game. The last game was really good, we created a lot of chances and dominated most of the game.

“It’s just the last bit, scoring goals from the chances we create, we have to improve on that. I certainly think we deserve more from the games so far though.

“We should probably be higher up the table, but if we can get the goals we need, we can have a great season.”

Albion’s only league victory of the season came on the opening day at Watford, and Propper is confident his team-mates will follow the game plan at Stamford Bridge, as they look to cause a Premier League upset.

“We have a specific plan for every game,” he continued. “We’ll need to be confident about what we’re doing, and if we can do that I think we can get something there.

“The quality of their players is very good, so it’s not just about experience. But if we can follow our plan as best as we can, then we’ll see what happens.”

There’s been a youthful feel to both sides so far this season, with the likes of Steven Alzate and Aaron Connolly featuring for the Seagulls, while Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham and Fikayo Tomori have regularly turned out for the Blues.

Propper, who signed for Albion from PSV back in 2017, spoke about Chelsea’s youth system and also that of his former Dutch employers, who sold home-grown talents Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie de Jong for big money over the summer.

“At Chelsea it’s a bit of a necessity, but in Holland it’s very common. At Ajax they give the youth a lot of opportunities to play in the first team.

“They had some great young players last year, but they’ve sold most of them, so it’s now a new group over there.

“At Chelsea they have a great youth academy as well, so there must be some great players coming through.”
