Webster played in a back three alongside Leon Balogun and Gaetan Bong in the 2-1 win at the Memorial Stadium, and is now eager to force his way into Graham Potter’s Premier League plans.

He said, “It was really pleasing, and nice to play a game and get some minutes under my belt. I had a full pre-season so I felt fit, but it was good to get out there and get my first match.

“Playing in a back three worked very well and it was a case of us locking up and stopping their threat. We played out from the back when we could and did that quite well.

“If we could have a cup run, it would be brilliant for players not in the team and it gives the manager a chance to see what we’re about, and hopefully give him some decisions to make.”

The 24-year-old praised Aaron Connolly and Steven Alzate for their impressive performances on the night, and also highlighted the importance of biding his time to secure a regular place in the team ahead of a return to Premier League action against Manchester City on Saturday.

“They looked brilliant, like they had played plenty of games already. They are both very good players and I’m sure both have bright futures in the game.

“Their time will come and if they keep playing like that, then it won’t be long until they’re in the first team.

“It’s all about recovery now, we’ll dust ourselves down and go again at the weekend. The lads  in defence have done excellently so far, so for me, it’s about being patient ready when the time comes.”
