Murray: Match fitness is the main focus

Glenn Murray, who now finds himself as the most senior member of Albion’s playing squad, knows a thing or two about pre-season preparations at the wise age of 35, and despite being best known for his hunger in front of goal, he admits the need for fitness at this stage of the year is more important.

Albion were narrowly beaten 2-1 by Fulham on Saturday afternoon. Murray saw a first-half header disallowed for offside, and the experienced frontman reflected on our third pre-season outing, which saw Pascal Gross open the scoring.

Murray said, “The main thing is to get that match fitness and get ready for the first weekend of the Premier League season, but it’s always nice to score goals, in whatever game you’re playing.

“It’s my job to get goals and I was close to getting one. I haven't looked back at the tape, but it was pretty tight [the offside].

“Obviously we don’t go out there to lose games, but Fulham are a week ahead of us because their season starts one week before ours.

“It was a step up in opponent from our last game in Austria, but all in all it was a good runout for the team."

Our pre-season schedule continues with a trip to Birmingham City next Saturday, and Murray, who has topped the club’s goalscoring charts in each of the past three seasons, is focused on seeing progression within the team after Graham Potter’s summer arrival.

“I don’t think it’s about improving anyone individually, it’s about improving the team,” he continued.

“That would have a knock-on effect, and for me personally, hopefully we’ll create more chances to score goals.“I feel good; obviously it’s a whole new regime and we’re trying to learn the gaffer’s ethos and trying to do that out on the field.

“We’re building up a little bit slower, and you can see some of the patterns coming out that we’ve been working on.

“As far as we’re concerned, we’re learning week in week out, day in day out, and I think you can see a difference to last year in the pre-season games so far.

“It’s all a progression from the training field onto the pitch, and so far so good.”
