The Dutchman scored one and assisted another at St Andrew's, and the boss spoke about the striker’s qualities following the convincing victory.

He said, “Jurgen is a player with a lot of potential, and he’s one of a number of players that we want to try and improve.

“That’s the job I have, and he’s applied himself really well since I’ve arrived. He’s had a tough time since he’s been here, and it probably hasn’t gone as well as he would have wanted.

“That happens in football sometimes, and you have to keep working hard.

“He’s been good to work with, and hopefully that can continue.”

The Seagulls began with a back three at the weekend, consisting of Shane Duffy, Lewis Dunk and Dan Burn.

Potter spoke about the flexibility involved within that system and singled out Burn for praise.

“You want your defenders to be able to defend in the wide areas and be able to step in when needed,” he continued.

“You don’t want them to be too rigid in those positions, otherwise you end up with a numerical disadvantage further up the field.

“Dan gives us an option and Bernardo can play there too, so we’re just using the group as well as we can.”

The side’s final two goals of the contest came from Duffy, with the Irishman twice latching onto free-kicks from summer signing Leandro Trossard.

The boss reflected on the threat that Albion pose from dead-ball situations, and highlighted their importance both from an attacking and defensive point of view.

“We’ve got a few big guys in there, normally my teams aren’t the biggest, so for me it’s something I’m still getting used to.

“It makes it a little easier when you have that physicality, but you also still need the right delivery and the organisation.

“They had a chance and hit the bar from a set-piece, so we're trying to improve at both ends of the field.”
