Murray cool on all-time record

Glenn Murray says he is eyeing up the club’s all-time goalscoring record, but insists it will not change his approach to the upcoming season.

Murray is on 109 goals and needs 15 more to beat Tommy Cook’s tally of 123, but stressed the need not to think too far ahead.

He said, “It’s a landmark that I’d be proud to reach, but it’s all about getting that first goal heading into a new season, then the second, and so on. That’s what got me to 109 and I’ve got to carry on in that vain.

“It would mean an awful lot to be the highest goalscorer for this club, and a current Premier League club too.

“I’ve scored goals for them throughout the divisions in League One, the Championship and the Premier League. It would be a great moment, but I won’t waste too much time thinking about it.

“I just want to stay fit and get as many goals as I can, and hopefully play a part in the team this year. What will be, will be, and I’ve got to concentrate on the here and now.”

The club has made two first-team signings to date, with the arrivals of Matthew Clarke and Leo Trossard from Portsmouth and KRC Genk respectively. Murray believes both have strengthened the squad in key areas.

“We’ve made the two additions. Clarke has come from Portsmouth, he’s a good centre-half and added to the group where we’re already strong.

“Leo has come over from Belgium, he’s got fantastic vision in the final third and I’m looking forward to playing with them both.”

The Seagulls frontman also spoke of his enjoyment playing under new boss Graham Potter, and explained that the first target will be to achieve Premier League survival once again.

“It’s been a really positive start. It’s a whole new regime, a different way of playing, and it’s been fun. I’m sure he expects goals from me, and that’s what I’ll be trying to do.

“The Premier League gets stronger and stronger, and we’ve got to try to get better with it. But first and foremost, we’ve got to stay in the division, and anything after that is a bonus.”
