The new recruits both made their debuts in the second half of the game at the weekend, playing 45 minutes each since joining from Portsmouth and KRC Genk respectively, and the Albion boss was pleased with how they fared.

He said, “Both of them were good in the second half, it’s never easy coming to a new club and settling in straight away.

“But they have both adapted well to an increase in level.

“It was nice for Leandro to get his goal and Matt was solid defensively, so I’m happy with their application this week and am looking forward to working with them going forward.”

The first team squad were also joined by a number of the club’s under-23 squad for their pre-season camp in Austria last week.

Aaron Connolly, Viktor Gyokeres, Robert Sanchez, Jan Mlakar, Steven Alzate and Max Sanders all linked up with Potter’s squad, and the head coach praised the efforts of the group as a whole and the latter two in particular, who played 45 minutes apiece.

“The lads that played did well and the group have trained in the same way throughout our time away,” he continued.

“The six of them have done well and not looked out of place, so it’s good to have them with us and we’ll keep working.

“Steven [Alzate] was really good in the first half and Max [Sanders] had a big say in the fourth goal at right-back. He’s conventionally a midfielder, so it’s good to know these individuals can play in a variety of positions too.

“He’s another one who has quality and ability and hopefully we can continue to see that, there’s still a lot of work to do for the squad, but we've already seen some good signs”
