Powell: That Was Our Best Performance

By Jake Ketley • 06 January 2019

Brighton & Hove Albion women’s first-team manager Hope Powell described today’s performance against Liverpool as the best since she was appointed as manager.

Powell’s side recorded their first away FA Women’s Super League win of the season with a 2-0 win at Prenton Park, and the manager was proud of her players’ resilience.

She said, “I'm really pleased with how the match went; from the performance we put in, the fact we got a clean sheet and the execution of our game plan.

“I think we performed better in the second half than we did in the first, so credit to Liverpool for the way they came out and played in the second half, but we were very resilient and that was pleasing.”

Powell also hopes that it will be a turning point for the rest of the season.

“It’s undoubtedly the best performance of our season, and probably the best performance we’ve had since I’ve been in post.

“Of course it helps that we’ve won the game, we need to look forward, take the positives and build on the performance today. Hopefully this will be a turning point for us this season.”

Albion next take on Manchester City in the FA Continental Tyres Cup match quarter-finals, but the Seagulls boss stressed that the next WSL match against Everton is still prominent in her thoughts.

“We’ll go again, it’s about rest and recovery now and having a really good go. I think that the Everton match on Sunday is more important for us, but we won’t overlook Thursday at the same time.

“It’s going to be tough against City, we played against them at home and they played very well. We appreciate that they will have more of the ball than us, so we need to defend as well as we did today on Thursday.”
