Women Preview: Albion Set For Crucial Yeovil Clash

By Jake Ketley • 13 March 2019

Following the recent international break, Brighton & Hove Albion are back in FA Women’s Super League action against bottom of the table Yeovil Town at the Avenue Stadium, kick-off 7.45pm.

Hope Powell’s side head into this match in their best run of form of the season, having lost only one of their previous five league matches, and February’s 0-0 draw with Bristol City and 2-1 victory over Birmingham City saw Powell claim the LMA manager of the month award.

The 2-1 victory last time out also strengthened Albion’s place in the WSL, moving the Seagulls on to 12 points, nine ahead of this evening's opponents who have two games in hand.

Despite falling behind in that match to a strike from England international Ellen White, Albion battled back well to level through Wales striker Kayleigh Green just minutes later.

Former Birmingham player Ellie Brazil then secured the three points after scoring a header against her former club.

In contrast, Yeovil Town have lost their previous ten matches in all competitions since the WSL defeat of Everton back in November.

Since their 1-0 win over the Toffees, Yeovil have had several narrow one-goal defeats against the likes of Birmingham, Bristol City and Liverpool, but ultimately have been unable to add to their points tally as they look to gain momentum in their fight for survival.

Most recently, the Glovers suffered a 3-0 defeat against title-chasing Arsenal as a brace from Kim Little and a Beth Mead strike ensured the Gunners added three points to their cause.

The two sides have played each other twice already this season, and on both occasions Albion have been the victors.

The teams first met in the FA WSL back in October, Jodie Brett and Victoria Williams handed Albion a two-goal lead. However, the Glovers made it a tense finish thanks to an Ellie Mason goal on 69 minutes, but the defence held strong to give Albion their first league win of the season.

The duo then faced-off in the FA Continental Tyres League Cup group stage, with the Seagulls needing a victory to ensure a place in the quarter-finals.

After Brazil had given Hope Powell’s side the lead, Yeovil hit back with a goal from Emily Syme. A penalty on the stroke of half-time was converted by captain Dani Buet and proved to be a turning point in the match.

Wales international Kayleigh Green extended Albion’s lead, before a smart finish from Beth Roe, who had come on as a substitute just seconds before sealed a place in the knockout stages.

With nine points currently separating the teams, a win for Albion would be crucial in helping them preserve their top-tier status for another season.
