Wally Gould Obituary 1938 - 2018

We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Albion great Wally Gould, aged 79.
 
A fixture in the Albion side for four seasons, Wally was a diminutive ball-playing winger and an integral member of the club’s Fourth Division championship-winning campaign of 1964/65, where he topped the scoring chart with 21 goals.
 
The title was clinched on the last day of the season back on 26th April 1965 against Darlington at the Goldstone, where goals from Wally, Jimmy Collins and Jack Smith sealed a 3-1 win in front of 31,423 supporters.
 
Yorkshire-born, Gould started his career with spells at Rotherham and Sheffield United, but his career took off following a move to York City in February 1961. His 25 goals from 120 Fourth Division appearances caught the eye of the Albion, and he headed south in a £4,000 deal in January 1964.
 
Wally’s consistently high level of performance in the blue and white stripes endeared him to the Goldstone faithful and he went on to make 193 appearances for the club, scoring 46 goals.
 
In February 1968 and much to the reluctance of the club, he was released to pursue a highly-successful career in South African football, featuring for Durban United, Hellenic and East London United.
 
Upon his return to England in the mid-Seventies, he saw out his career with spells at Folkstone and Chelmsford in the Southern League, before his appointment as assistant manager to Alan Durban at Stoke City in 1979.
