Bernardo: I Was Much More Prepared

By James Hilsum • 26 November 2018

Brighton & Hove Albion defender Bernardo was pleased to put in a much-improved performance, following his man-of-the-match display against Leicester City on Saturday.

It was the Brazilian’s first league start since the opening day defeat to Watford, and the full-back felt he acquitted himself much better in the 1-1 draw with the Foxes.

He said, “I felt much more prepared, it is a whole different game than I was used to in Germany, but I always want to play, so it was important for me to focus and change some things to be successful.

“I think I've developed since that match against Watford, and more prepared to be better for my team.

“Compared to the first match, that was a much better impression of myself and I think I can develop more.

“It's also a lot of pressure off my shoulders because for many weeks I was thinking that I need to perform when I get my chance.

“Every single player has these kind of thoughts, especially if your first match was not as good, so I wanted to change that impression as soon as possible.”

Despite putting in an improved performance, Bernardo was left to reflect on a disappointing result and highlighted the areas to work on going forward.

“It was frustrating, especially with the circumstances of having one player more and having a number of chances in the first half to get three points.

“We know they are a very strong team, even with one player less, so I wouldn’t say it was a surprise [that they came back].

“Maybe we need to keep a higher level of concentration when we have one player more, especially when things seem to be going well for us, because it can easily change.”
