Here's How He Did It: Murray's 100 Goals!
Brighton & Hove Albion striker Glenn Murray scored his 100th goal for the Seagulls against Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier today, making him the club’s post-war record goalscorer. The 35-year-old reached the total after notching 57 goals during his first spell at the club, before adding a further 43 goals since returning to Sussex from AFC Bournemouth in 2016. Here’s a look at how Murray worked his way towards 100 goals, as he found the back of the net across the top three tiers of English football and also in cup competitions. 1ST GOAL: Murray made his debut for the Seagulls as a second-half substitute against Northampton Town at Sixfields Stadium in 2008, but his opening goal came in the following fixture at the Withdean Stadium. Dean Wilkins presented the forward with his first start against Crewe Alexandra, and Murray found the back of the net twice against the Railwaymen, as the Seagulls secured a 3-0 victory in the league. 10TH GOAL: Albion continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 2-1 victory over Southend United at Roots Hall, and Murray continued his fine partnership with Nicky Forster with the opening goal of the game. Murray had returned to the side after receiving a red card against Barnet in the League Cup, and the forward converted from David Livermore’s free-kick, before Forster added a second in the closing stages. 20TH GOAL: The forward’s next milestone was reached against Oldham Athletic at Boundary Park, as he cancelled out Andy Liddell’s penalty with his tenth goal of the season in the 20th minute. Murray’s goal put an end to a four-match losing streak, as the Seagulls began a busy Christmas schedule which ended with a 2-0 victory over Swindon Town at the County Ground. 30TH GOAL: Murray had a memorable game against Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park in December 2009, as he found the back of the net four times to reach the 30-goal mark. The frontman had already scored twice against Wycombe in a 4-4 draw in the FA Cup that season, but his four goals just after Christmas helped the Seagulls claim a 5-2 victory against the Chairboys. 40TH GOAL: Moving into the 2010/11 season, which saw the Seagulls win promotion to the Championship, Murray headed his 40th goal for the club in a 2-0 victory over Yeovil Town. His 43rd-minute header against the Glovers opened the scoring at the Withdean Stadium, before Inigo Calderon doubled the advantage, as Albion stretched their unbeaten league run to ten matches. 50TH GOAL: Having won five consecutive matches at the Withdean, the Seagulls extended the run to six games with a convincing 4-0 win against Plymouth Argyle, and Murray scored his 50th goal for the club to open the scoring. Murray then added a second goal after Chris Wood made it 2-0, before Francisco Sandaza rounded off the scoring against the Pilgrims. 57TH GOAL: Murray’s final goal of his first spell at the club came on the road at Walsall towards the end of the 2010/11 season, and his strike helped the Seagulls secure the League One title. Inigo Calderon’s first-half goal was cancelled out in the 11th minute, but Murray scored the pivotal goal to put the Seagulls in front, before Elliott Bennett made sure of things late on to make it 3-1. 58TH GOAL: More than five years after scoring his 57th goal, Murray returned to the south coast from AFC Bournemouth and found the back of the net on his first appearance for Albion at the Amex Stadium. The striker’s left-footed strike against Nottingham Forest made it 2-0, before he added another to seal a 3-0 victory for Chris Hughton’s team to momentarily put them top of the Championship. 60TH GOAL: Murray reached 60 goals in Albion following game at the Amex, as his right-footed strike made it 2-0 against the Millers, to continue the club’s unbeaten start to the campaign. The forward’s goal came in-between strikes from Anthony Knockaert and Tomer Hemed, as Hughton’s team continued their positive start to the season in front of the club’s home supporters. 70TH GOAL: Albion travelled to Ewood Park with a 14-game unbeaten run in the league, but Murray began the game on the bench against Blackburn Rovers. That didn’t stop him from scoring his 70th goal for the club, as he found the back of the net seven minutes after coming on, with a delicate chip over current team-mate Jason Steele to make it 3-1. 80TH GOAL: Murray reached his next milestone on the final day of the 2016/17 Championship season, after the Seagulls had already secured their promotion to the Premier League. The striker fired home from the penalty spot to put Albion ahead, which triggered jubilant celebrations against Aston Villa at Villa Park - but Jack Grealish’s late goal denied the Seagulls from winning the league. 81ST GOAL: With Albion searching for the first away victory in the Premier League, Murray headed his first top-flight goal for the club against West Ham United at the London Stadium. Pascal Gross floated a cross into the penalty area and Murray glanced a header past Joe Hart, before making it 3-0 in the second half from the penalty spot. 90TH GOAL: Murray also found the back of the net in the reverse fixture against the Hammers, as he broke the deadlock at the Amex Stadium - with Gross claiming the assist for the forward yet again. The Seagulls produced another fine performance against West Ham, as they won 3-1 thanks to further goals from Jose Izquierdo and Gross, after Javier Hernandez had levelled. 100TH GOAL: History was made when Murray scored the winning goal against Wolves to take him one goal ahead of Kit Napier as the club's post-war leading goalscorer. With the Seagulls searching for the opening goal, there was Murray in the right place at the right time to convert Bruno's cross-shot into the back of net and hand Albion all three points. The Seagulls frontman is second in the list of the club's all-time top scorers, with just Tommy Cook's tally of 123 goals left to beat.
